Our Auckland Voice tutors advise that you choose your repertoire carefully, and avoid music that is unusually taxing in intensity or range.
If you need to change the key of a song, you can. It is not an artistic compromise to change pop songs into a range you find comfortable. Many contemporary singers are men with unusually high ranges, such as Stevie Wonder, or women with high voices, such as Celine Dion. You should work to extend your range with exercises, although some songs may prove to just not be right for your voice.
Auckland Voice lessons tip – Develop a unique voice
You should listen to great singers, study them, transcribe songs and sing great solos, listen to phrasing, and try to figure out what makes your favourite singers unique. Remember that it is not healthy for your vocal chords to continually imitate others to the exclusion of developing your own voice. Voices often don’t fully mature until singers are in their mid-twenties or even into their thirties, so be patient and don’t force your voice.
Voice tuition Auckland – Pay attention to the how you speak
Over the course of a day, most of us speak far more than we sing, and as singers, we need to be aware of how we use our voices when we speak. Beyond being a means of communication, your voice is a vital part of your psyche and personality, so you should look afer it.
