FAQs regarding Dyslexia:
1. I think my daughter or son might perhaps be dyslexic, but their own school isn’t show any interest.
Some primary and secondary schools in the country may give your child fantastic support for dyslexia, but there are still many others that have not had the relevant training in Special Education Needs. As a result, signs of dyslexia are sometimes still not taken seriously or misunderstood as low ability, slow development, or even laziness and inability to focus.
2. How and when does Dyslexia Occur?
Some kids are born with a genetic code which allows them to use the part of their brain that alters and creates perceptions. Being born with this genetic code does not give your child dyslexia, it only makes it possible for them to develop it. This explains why some experts think Dyslexia may in fact be a hereditary condition.
Developing dyslexia involves many complex stages, and specific timing. In fact, developing dyslexia is so complicated that it’s a wonder anyone can do it.
Dyslexics won’t start to develop dyslexia in Primary 1, or even in nursery. The process begins long before that. A dyslexic child starts using the special talent that brings about dyslexia, perhaps as early as just three months old.
It is thought to be between the ages of three and six months, that dyslexic children begin the development of their additional skills, abilities and deficiencies. Some think that if an infant starts using the distortion function of the brain before the age of three months, then the resulting issues will be much more severe than dyslexia.
There is no particular age when it is better to test for dyslexia, although an assessment can be more detailed where literacy levels are an important factor. As soon as difficulties become more apparent, and particularly where a child is distressed or is showing behavioural problems, it’s very important that an assessment is promptly and properly carried out.
