Some of our FAQs regarding Dyslexia:
My child is falling badly behind in school and may have substantial dyslexic difficulties. We feel that the help being given in school is not sufficient at all.
Currently you can take guidance and advice about applying for Special Educational Needs support, where the funding for specialist support is given by your Local Authority, not the school. Unfortunately this is becoming very difficult to achieve. This is usually down to financial reasons, and some Local Authorities have tough criteria, which may prove to be useless. You can still apply for a Statement if you feel that these criteria would be unfair, and challenge any adverse decisions.
NB: The government is looking to streamline the hassling process into a single assessment and plan. It is proposed for this to be in place by 2014. Until then, the present system of Statements of additional support need applies.
I’m concerned that mainstream education is not able to give my severely dyslexic child a good schooling. Are there any specialist schools for dyslexic children?
Ask your Local Authority for a comprehensive list of specialist schools. Mark any giving support for specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and go to them. These range from the specialist school to schools with specialist support available. You may be able to get a Statement of Special Educational Need to cover the cost of the fees, although you might have to take the case to a tribunal.
My child has recently been diagnosed with dyslexia. How should I explain this to them?
Your Dyslexia tutors in Wellington can suggest books which you can read to your child to help both them and you understand dyslexia
What can I do to help my child at home?
